MINNIJEAN BROWN TRICKEY IS GUEST OF HONOR AT 1st ANNUAL SOJOURN REUNION
MILLBRAE, CA. On September 20th , 2003 Sojourners gathered at the Millbrae
Meadows Swim Club for a night of food, fun, swimming, music and interaction with fellow alumni. There were roughly 250 students, 30 teachers and parents in attendance as well as
Jackie Speier, California State Senator. Senator Speier honored Minnijean with a plaque of appreciation for her continued dedication to teaching tolerance, acceptance and activism.
There was delicious food cooked by assistant director/chef Doug Biggs and energizing
music played by two different bands. Two teachers who are involved with Sojourn,
Mr. Ashley Gray from So. San Francisco HS and Mr. Bob Hallett from Westmoor HS
brought their bands to the reunion. They featured original songs about civil rights and
provided entertainment for everyone. Mr. Gray debuted his “Little Rock Nine” song to the
crowd and Minnijean was especially touched, “There is little that brings me more joy than
seeing our youth dedicating themselves to civil rights, civic responsibility, nonviolence, and justice…making a difference in their own lives and communities.”
A few brave souls hopped in the pool, a few even braver souls moved on the dance floor,
but most of the Sojourners mingled, ate and talked with other alumni. We were excited
to see the sign up sheets fill up at the front table with students interested in participating
in various programs and look forward to the involvement of more students and alumni.
It was a great event that brought Sojourners from all over the bay area together, and
even two Sojourn alumni drove all the way from Los Angeles! This reunion provided
inspiration for the entire Sojourn family to keep the dream alive. |
