CALIFORNIA STATE STANDARDS AND THE NATIONAL FRAMEWORK ALIGNMENT
Sojourn to the Past is an intensive 10 day study of the Civil Rights Movement. We cover a
majority of the California State Standards for both the 11th and 12th grade from Constitutional
law to modern social and economic issues. This alignment grid will be helpful as you develop
your curriculum.

King Papers Project and the Liberation Curriculum
The King Papers Project is the most extensive collection of Dr. King's writings, speeches and sermons and it has been made available to you and your students online!! In addition, KPP
supports teachers through their Liberation Curriculum resources by helping teachers in creating historically accurate and pedagogically effective educational materials that address issues
of social justice and human rights.

Teaching Tolerance
As a project of the Southern Poverty Law Center, Teaching Tolerance endeavors to dismantle
bigotry and to create, in its place, communities that value diversity. Teachers have access to classroom resources, guidebooks for adult and student activism, educational grants and daily
news about groups and individuals working for Tolerance. For instance, “10 Ways to Fight Hate
on Campus” is a great way to ignite dialogue and action among your students.

Facing History and Ourselves
Facing History offers incredible resources and workshops for teachers interested in challenging
their students to examine the historical impact of racism, prejudice, and anti-Semitism in
order to promote a more humane and informed society. Their classroom resources help students to identify the link between historical events within an increasingly interconnected
world and the choices that young people make daily.

The official living memorial dedicated to Dr. Martin Luther King by Coretta Scott King promotes peace, justice and social activism. Educational resources include the documents outlining the ‘Principles of Nonviolence” and the Steps for “Nonviolent Direct Action.” For research and
background knowledge on Civil Rights activism this is perfect.

The ADL offers numerous resources for teachers including books, lesson plans, tips on
how to create an anti-bias learning environment and how to combat anti-Semitism in the
classroom. In particular, their WORLD OF DIFFERENCE Institute offers powerful workshops
for middle and high school faculty and staff.

greenline C-SPAN in the Classroom
Get your students fired up about the 2004 elections. Have they registered to vote? Here,
teachers can find lesson plans, archive videos of speeches, suggestions for student
projects on presidents and primary sources related to many civic education topics.

The mission of the CCE is to promote an enlightened and responsible citizenry committed to democratic principles and actively engaged in the practice of democracy in the United States and other countries.
