Frequently Asked Questions

What safety measures are in place for the students during the trip?

Sojourn prioritizes the safety of all participants. We hire our own private security team to guard hotels at night, sitting on every floor where we have students. We have a registered nurse who travels with us full-time on the Journey. The nurse’s job is to be available 24/7 to support students with health issues, allergies, etc.

Are the college credits transferable to four-year institutions?

The three units are classified as electives and are transferable to most colleges. But it is important to check with the registrar’s office at the school you plan to attend. If they are not transferable, you can petition to have the units accepted.

Can I room with a friend?

Students are paired up with another student from their school based on whom they’ve requested.

How do I qualify for a scholarship?

Sojourn provides scholarship money to students who want to attend but may not have the financial resources. These scholarships are based on family income. Contact us for other scholarship opportunities.

Can students fundraise to pay for their Sojourn trip?

We can provide students with an online fundraising platform in which a link is easily shared with family and friends to accept tax deductible donations.

Is the trip really all inclusive?

Yes! The only money your student needs to bring along is for souvenirs or additional snacks outside of the three meals provided in the cost of the Journey.

What distinguishes Sojourn from other educational field trips?

Sojourn Project has exclusive access to historical sites, leaders from the Civil Rights Movement who speak directly with the students, specialized curated curriculum resources and expert teachers.  We strive to inspire the students to return from the Journey determined to make a difference in their communities.

What our students, teachers, and leaders are saying…

  • "Witnessing students discussing the complexities of the history and policies of the United States in our nation’s revered landmarks is one of my most treasured teaching moments."

    K. McNulty Middle School Teacher, Sojourn Project Alumni
  • "Life-Changing. Transformative. Soul-Softening. Seeing myself as a sister to my fellow brothers and sisters in the walk of life of justice... and Making a gracious oath to no longer be a silent witness in every aspect of my life."

    W. Morgan Student, Sojourn Project Alumni
  • "The goal of teaching is to be able to instill confidence and skills in a student to go along with content knowledge and relate it to the student’s life. Sojourn was able to do that with me by teaching me as a high school student more than just the history of the Civil Rights Movement, but to take action and be a voice of my community…"

Pablo Aguilera Graduate, Stanford University, U.S. History Teacher, Sojourn Project Alumni
  • "I thought no one cared about us. During my Sojourn Journey, I felt recognized, validated, and empowered for the first time. You could feel it. American Civil Rights speakers talking about their firsthand experiences and showing us that we don’t need to be quiet. Any one of us can bring about change."

    A. Vasquez Pre-Law Student, Social Activist, Sojourn Project Alumni
  • "The students I met on Sojourn Project…received valuable lessons in tolerance, nonviolence, compassion, forgiveness, faith, and social responsibility. These are the concepts that will give rise to tomorrow’s social leaders."

Congressman John Lewis 5th District of Georgia, Civil Rights Leader, Sojourn Project Mentor
  • "The most impactful thing was meeting Reverend Billy Kyles, because he made me realize that I do have a dream. All I have to do is believe in myself."

    Sojourn Project Alumni
  • "…Before Sojourn,…I was closeminded and judgmental. My grades were suffering and I was lacking inspiration. From Sojourn, not only did I learn about the Civil Rights Movement, I learned about myself. I began to realize that I was capable of succeeding…I now attend college and am interested in becoming a lawyer or police officer…"

    I. B. Sojourn Project Alumni

  • "I recently partook in a different program, with a similar theme. However, I liked your program more because it was such an emotional experience that really changed who I am as a person. The preparation pre-trip gets them ready for something that's so deep, it seems beyond their comprehension, yet their responsiveness and comments prove how much they're not only getting, but how much they are retaining…It's also about a much bigger picture for them as young adults, developing a level of understanding other people that truly sets them apart – in whatever path they take. I'M BLOWN AWAY!"
