FAQs for Students

How safe are students on the Journey?

Sojourn prioritizes the safety of all participants. We hire our own private security team to guard hotels at night, sitting on every floor where we have students.

Are the college credits transferable to four-year institutions?

The three units are classified as electives and are transferable to most colleges. But it is important to check with the registrar’s office at the school you plan to attend. If they are not transferable, you can petition to have the units accepted.

Can I room with a friend?

Students are paired up with another student from their school based on whom they’ve requested.

How do I qualify for financial aid?

Sojourn provides thousands of dollars in scholarship money annually to students who want to attend but may not have the direct resources. We base these scholarships on family income (these are the same as the free and reduced lunch qualification figures).

What if my family makes too much but still would like financial aid?

Sojourn also has a “wish list” request. Students who desire a smaller level of financial support can apply for this form of aid. We base these scholarships on family income, unforeseen hardship, student participation in fundraising, and the letters they’ve written seeking support.

Do students also fundraise?

Students are asked to write letters to family, friends, and anyone who might be able to support their effort to go, such as parents’ co-workers. In our history, students have raised more than $1 million with the help of our letter template, and we find that even students of means appreciate Sojourn more when they’ve worked to go on the Journey. Some students have raised so much, they’ve helped fund scholarships for others. (Our theory is that if 20 people donate XXX then we will have XXX.)

What responsibilities do parent participants have while attending the Journey?

Parents are considered adult participants, and therefore have no official chaperoning duties.

How do you make sure everyone stays healthy?

We have a registered nurse who travels with us full-time on the Journey. The nurse’s job is to be available 24/7 to support students with health issues, allergies, etc.

Is the trip really all-inclusive?

Yes! The only money your student needs to bring along is for souvenirs or additional snacks outside of the three meals provided in the cost of the Journey.

What distinguishes Sojourn from other educational field trips?

Our access to historical sites, icons of the Civil Rights Movement who meet only with Sojourn students, meticulously curated curriculum resources, outstanding teachers, and our ability to connect with and inspire each participant.

FAQs for Teachers

How safe are students on the Journey?

Sojourn prioritizes the safety of all participants. We hire our own private security team to guard hotels at night, sitting on every floor where we have students.

How much additional work is this for teachers?

Sojourn works collaboratively with every educator to make the year successful. At the beginning of the year, we send out support materials and work with schools to set up on-campus presentations and parent meetings. We ask that teachers communicate with our office regularly, come to parent meetings, help us collect paperwork, and work with students on their campus to prepare by reading books and answering reading guide questions. After the trip, it may be necessary to help students further by supporting them in their efforts to earn college credits. Teacher involvement can be more directive and intense, if you wish to support fundraising efforts, set up a club, etc.

How many students from my school need to participate for a teacher to travel?

There is no set number of students required to travel. We do have teachers who travel with us independently of students to get the professional development experience. But if there are more than five students from a school traveling, it does offset the cost for educators.

Typically, the contact educator on campus will help students proofread and mail the fundraising letters. Additional fundraising can also be done on individual campuses and in the students’ communities.
